Current Status The College has excellent facilities, which Br Kelvin Canavan, the Executive Director of Schools, has described as “world class”. An extensive development programme has been undertaken in recent years to ensure that all facilities are in excellent condition and able to provide for the contemporary learning needs of students. ICT is a particular feature of the College, which boasts the best student-to-computer ratio in the Archdiocese. The College is a pilot school for the introduction of “My Internet”. Staff and student access to ICT facilities and services is complemented by extensive effective incorporation of technology into teaching and learning programmes. The College has ready access to the gymnasium and ovals belonging to Boys’ Town, which is situated adjacent to the College. The emphasis given to contemporary teaching and learning practice was affirmed by the College’s successful completion of the educational audit in March 2003. Significant commendations in the audit report included the quality of the teaching and learning programmes, the effective integration of System priorities, the comprehensive manner of the implementation of the Standards Referenced Framework, and the number of HSC courses that were above the State average. St John Bosco College offered the HSC for the first time in 1999 and, as a result, has experienced a period of rapid growth and development. The enrolment has doubled in the last eight years to a total of 825 students in 2005.
Student numbers began to decline in the early 1990’s as parents sought a continuous and unbroken secondary education for their sons and daughters. In response, the decision was taken to extend the school’s educational programmes to include Years 11 and 12. The school’s name was changed to St John Bosco College in 1998 when the first Year 11 students were enrolled. These students subsequently went on to successfully complete their HSC in 1999. St John Bosco College has responded dynamically to the decision to include Years 11 and 12. The College slogan, “Educational Excellence in a Caring Environment” gave impetus to much of the development over recent years. The introduction of senior students saw significant curriculum development and this has impacted across all year levels, where there is now a genuine focus on quality teaching and learning. The quality pastoral care programmes for which the College had become renowned have been sustained and developed to cater for the greater number of students across the increased range of age groups. Positive staff-student relationships remain a significant feature of College life. The influx of new staff to cater for the increasing student population has sparked a renewed interest in rediscovering and celebrating the Salesian Spirit that is at the foundation of the College’s life. Educational Vision
The College motto, “Gaudium et Spes” (meaning “Joy and Hope”) indicates the spirit in which the College was founded and from which it continues to draw its inspiration. The significant features of the College badge are: The College badge is a plain and uncomplicated statement of the ethos of the College: Christian, Bosconian (Salesian) and human.
St John Bosco College has actively implemented a research-based approach to the development and implementation of contemporary teaching and learning strategies. Attention is being systematically given to a variety of teaching and learning issues including Boys’ Education, Middle Schooling, Learning Styles and Assessment for Learning. The high level of professional pedagogical dialogue and a rich tradition of resource sharing enable staff to continually and critically evaluate their teaching and learning practices to ensure that the demands of contemporary education and the needs of students are most effectively met. Students at St John Bosco College have a wide range of co-curricula opportunities including dance, visual and performing arts, chess, debating, public speaking, mock trials, and sport. The College has a regular Friday sporting programme offering competitive, representative sport and recreational sport. Bosco College is a foundation member of the Shire Combined Catholic Colleges, which will commence operation in 2005. Students are able to access state representative sporting pathways via the College’s membership of the Southern Sydney Combined Catholic Colleges Sporting Association.
Staff-student relationships are extremely positive, the students are generally well behaved and there is a strong sense of community within the College, supported and promoted by an active pastoral care programme.
The College Executive comprises the Principal, the Assistant Principal, the Religious Education Co-ordinator, the Curriculum Co-ordinator, the Pastoral Care Co-ordinator, the Administration Co-ordinator and the Business and Resources Manager. The Curriculum Committee and the Pastoral and Administration Team are both very active. There are regular Executive, staff, KLA and committee meetings, and there is a focus upon collaborative decision-making. The daily morning briefing is a key component of staff communication.
There is a strong sense of community in the local area
and within the Parish. This flows into the life of the College in positive
ways, giving rise to a strong sense of community within the College.
Parents are very supportive of the College; attendance at a variety
of parent nights is high and parents are actively involved in volunteer
programmes. Parents also give strong support to student involvement
in extra-curricula activities. The “Parent Forum”, which
tends to be educational and informative in its orientation, meets once
per term with an average of approximately 20 parents per meeting. Each
meeting has a focus upon a specific topic or issue. |
